I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be to find a good car repair shop, which is why I’ve decided to write this article.
I want to share my tips and experiences to help you make a good decision when it comes to getting your car repaired here. Whether you’re a resident or just visiting Poland, I hope this article will provide some valuable insights. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the topic.
My Personal Experience with Car Repair in Poland and The Difficulties of Finding a Good Shop
I have been driving a car for almost 20 years now, and during that time I have had to deal with many car breakdowns. When I first started driving, it was often difficult for me to find a good mechanic who could fix my car properly without charging me too much for their services. Over the years, I have learned that it is not always wise to trust a mechanic just because someone has recommended them to me.
Just because a mechanic was able to fix a minor issue with a car belonging to one of my neighbors doesn’t mean they will be able to fix my car, especially if he drives a different make or model of vehicle.
↳ PRO TIP: Do you like traveling? Then before you buy any ticket or book an attraction, check if it's available in this worldwide Viator Database. You may save a lot of money and time. No need to thank me :)
Nowadays, it is easier to find a good repair shop thanks to the internet. Not only can you search for a shop in your area, but you can also read reviews about their company. While this is a good approach, it is not always enough to make the right choice.
Understanding the Different Types of Car Repair Shops in Poland
If I were to explain the different types of repair shops available, I would create six categories. It can be helpful to determine which category a shop falls into before taking your car in for repairs.
1. Authorised Service Station of a Brand Network
A dealership repair shop is a service station typically located next to a car dealership. They will repair your car according to the manufacturer’s specifications and provide periodic maintenance services such as oil changes and filter replacements. If your car is still under manufacturer warranty, it is a good idea to go to a dealership repair shop to ensure that you don’t void the warranty.
However, if your car is no longer under warranty, you may want to consider other options as these types of shops can be more expensive. While they will certainly fix your car using original parts and high-quality tools, the cost may be higher than other options. Keep in mind that if you are not concerned about using original parts and just want a reliable repair job, there may be more affordable options available.
How to Find This One Nearby?
To find a dealership repair shop, you can search for: “autoryzowany serwis [car brand] [city in polish language]” on Google. For example, if you are looking for an authorized Ford service center in Warsaw, you would search for “autoryzowany serwis Ford Warszawa.” The search results will provide a list of websites and addresses for the dealership repair shops in your area.
2. High Quality Independent Service Networks
In Poland, there are several high-quality service networks that have a good reputation for providing high-standard services. These are regular repair shops that have applied to be branded by the network and have met certain qualifications for technology, procedures, and customer service. Examples of these networks in Poland include Bosch Car Service and Q-Service Castrol.
Both of these networks generally work on all car brands, although some services may specialize in a particular brand. If this is the case, the brand name should be mentioned somewhere at the station. Keep in mind that while these networks often offer quality services, they may also be more expensive than other options.
I do not have any experience with Q-Service, however I have had experience with Bosch Car Service and have been satisfied with the work they have done on my car. They have fixed my car properly and met the estimated cost and time for the repairs. They also called me on the same day to let me know the repair cost and the time needed. In terms of pricing, you can expect Bosch Car Service to be approximately 25% cheaper than dealership repair shops.
- If you are interested in using Q-Service, you can visit their website at https://qservicecastrol.eu/warsztaty/.
- A list of Bosch Car Service locations is available at https://www.boschcarservice.com/pl/pl/znajd%C5%BA-warsztat.
3. Independent (Unauthorised) Repair Shops Specialising in the Particular Brand
I personally prefer independent repair shops that specialize in a particular brand of car. Whenever I have had a more complicated car breakdown, especially one involving the electronic systems, I have chosen this type of service. In my experience, they have the best knowledge of how a particular car is built and can quickly dismantle and repair the parts because they work with the same brand of car over and over again.
In my opinion, these types of shops should charge about 30% less than authorized service at a dealership.
How To Find Such a Service?
One way to find an independent repair shop that specializes in a particular brand is through car enthusiast forums or discussion groups. Once you find a shop that you trust, it can be helpful to stick with them as long as you are driving the same brand of car. If you switch to a different brand, you may need to find a new shop.
You can also try using Google to search for “nieautoryzowany serwis [brand] [city typed in polish]” to find shops in your area. For example, if you are looking for a Ford repair shop in Katowice, you can search for “nieautoryzowany serwis Ford Katowice.” You can visit the websites of the different shops and look for logos and graphics that indicate they specialize in your car make.
4. The Regular Garage Specializing in All Brands and All Types of Cars
Actually this is the most common type of repair shop in the country. If you’re not sure what’s wrong with your car or the repair process is complex, it might be better to avoid this type of repair shop. They claim they can fix any car and any brand, but it’s always best to be cautious. Instead, you might want to consider a repair shop that specializes in a particular make or model of car. This way, you can be sure the technicians are familiar with the specific needs of your vehicle and can provide the best possible service.
There are a few reasons why I think it might not be a good idea to go to such a general repair shop:
- They may not have the specialized knowledge or tools needed to properly repair your specific make and model of car.
- Someone who repairs all types of cars may not be an expert in any of them.
- It’s possible that the repair process could end up causing more damage to your car.
I am not saying this is the case for all of such places. I expain, why I am not a fan of those. Statisticaly speaking, the most problems I had with repair shops was with these onces.
5. Repair Shops That Specialize in Small Repairs and Tires Change
If you just need a tire change or some basic maintenance, like changing the oil or brake pads, a general service center might be a good choice. These types of centers typically offer quick, affordable services and are convenient if you’re already there for another reason. Just keep in mind that they may not be equipped to handle more complex repairs. If you need more extensive work done on your car, it might be best to go to a specialized repair shop or dealership.
6. Air Condiitoning Repair Shops
When it comes to problems with your car’s air conditioning system, in my opinion it is usually best to go to a specialized AC repair shop. These types of shops have the specialized tools and expertise needed to properly diagnose and fix any issues with your AC. Here are a few reasons why you might want to avoid other types of repair shops for AC issues:
- Filling up the gas in the AC system might not be enough to fix the problem. There could be other underlying issues that need to be addressed.
- If you go to a general repair shop or service center, they might not have the specialized tools and equipment needed to properly diagnose and fix the problem.
- If the problem isn’t properly fixed the first time, you could end up paying for the same repair twice. An AC repair shop is more likely to be able to fix the problem correctly the first time around.
Asking for estimates and Comparing Prices
It can be challenging to compare prices for car repairs before the work is done, especially if you’re not sure what the problem is. However, if you do know what needs to be done (such as changing a timing belt), it’s a good idea to call a few different repair shops and ask about their prices and time needed for repair. This can help you get a sense of the going rate and find a good deal.
Keep in mind that a repair shop with a long waiting list might be a good sign – it could mean that they are in high demand because they do good work. However, it’s also important to be wary of choosing the cheapest option. Cheap parts or labor might not always be the best value in the long run. The final price depends on:
- labour rate
- parts price (they might be original, high quality but not original, low quality – the cheapes ones)
So when asking for the price, you want to also ask about the type of parts and their brands they are going to use. Once done, you may want to check their average prices in the internet to see how much of the price offered by the service is influenced by the parts.
How to Prepare Your Car For Repair
Before taking your car to a repair shop, there are a few things you might want to do to prepare:
- Remove any valuables from the car to prevent them from being lost or stolen (nothing has ever been stolen from my car, but it is better to take it out for your own peace of mind)
- Cover your seats with plastic bags to protect them from stains or damage (a mechanic once got inside my car and left a stain on the seat).
- Request repair shop not to replace your registration plates frame (once it happened to me that they replaced my original registration plates frame with the one advertising their services)
- Take out any necessary items from the trunk that you may need while the car is being repaired (be prepared for the possibility that the repair may take longer than expected).

In conclusion, it’s important to remember that price isn’t always the most important factor when it comes to choosing a car repair shop in Poland. While it’s certainly important to find a good deal, it’s also crucial to consider other factors such as the knowledge, experience, and track record of the repair shop. A shop that has been in business for many years and uses the latest technology is likely to provide higher quality service than a newer, cheaper shop that may not have the same level of expertise. While it may be tempting to try and save money by choosing the cheapest option, it’s important to remember that spending a little extra upfront can save you a lot of headaches and expenses down the road. Remember, it’s better to pay for a reliable repair now than to have to pay for additional repairs in the near future.
